The First "Computer Bug"

While Grace Hopper was working on the Harvard Mark II Computer at Harvard University, her associates discovered a moth stuck in a relay and thereby impeding operation, whereupon she remarked that they were "debugging" the system. Though the term computer bug cannot be definitively attributed to Admiral Hopper, she did bring the term into popularity. The remains of the moth can be found in the group's log book at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C..

Amazing.....

8 GB RAM, Quad Core Processor, 500 GB HDD, 64 - bit architecture, LCD/TFT monitor: Does that seem to be a great configuration that we can have these days? Just have a small peep into the past on the road we were to be at the current technological era, how the advertisements were couple of decades back:

National Coming Out Day

Earlier, I talked about some unknown special days people celebrate in Ask Stupid Question Day and today is also one such day for some people, its National Coming Out Day. Read on....

National Coming Out Day is observed on October 11 by members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities and their allies. It is highly encouraged for participants in this movement to wear identifying symbols, such as the pink triangle, the Greek letter lambda, and rainbows, in jewelry and on their clothing, to demonstrate their presence in all walks of life, all ages and all ethnic groups.

National Coming Out Day logo designed by Keith Haring

The day was founded by Dr. Robert Eichberg and Jean O'Leary in 1988, in celebration of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights one year earlier, in which 500,000 people marched on Washington, DC, USA, for gay and lesbian equality. National Coming Out Day events are aimed at raising awareness of the LGBT community among the general populace in an effort to give a familiar face to the LGBT rights movement.

In the United States, the Human Rights Campaign manages the event under the National Coming Out Project, offering resources to LGBT individuals, couples, parents and children, as well as straight friends and relatives, to promote awareness of LGBT families living honest and open lives.

Despite its name, National Coming Out Day is observed worldwide.

Ask a Stupid Question Day!

Yes, can you believe it, there is even a day for asking a "Stupid Question" and that is today! Huh...

I always thought, who the hell comes up with all such 'Stupid days'?, haha, I guess this might be my stupid question for the day. The hype for such days started with Valentines Day and later came Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Grandparents Day and what not.

Taken our culture, I think that there is no need for all such days. Its because we do not need a specific day to thank/to show love to our parents or the person whom we love. We always do it and we can always spend some time for them when needed or when ever we can.

Coming to my initial question, Who the hell creates such 'days'?

These "Days" are created by companies, special interest groups, sports teams, and not to forget the major contributor the greeting card companies(including Ecards) by simply declaring it so.

It seems some of these "days" are created because there isn't anything going on a particular day, and the card companies need something for every day of the year to keep their business running. The vast majority of these are local, one-time events that do not capture much attention and are soon forgotten. Official or not, a number of these take hold, and show up year after year.
At least one individual or company has created a number of humorous "days". They created the day, copyrighted it (believe it or not, it's true), and then wrote a book describing them. These "days" were created simply for profit.

Let us have some insight on, Origin of Ask a Stupid Question Day:

The roots of this special day goes back to the 1980's. At the time, there was a movement by teachers to try to get kids to ask more questions in the classroom. Kids sometimes hold back, fearing their question is stupid, and asking it will result in ridicule.Teachers created this day on September 28, If it fell on a weekend, they would celebrate it on the last day of the month.

Check out some weirdest days that are celebrated:

Chocolate Cake Day (Who needs a day for this, I eat it when ever I like)
Beer Can Appreciation Day (Same thig goes here also, I can drink when ever I like)
National Inane Answering Message Day (Who cares!!)
Clean out Your Computer Day (one in a year, come on)
Walking the Dog Day (If you dont walk, you have to clean its S&^%)
National Potato Chip Day ($$%^*&* &*&* &*%&^)
National Indian Pudding Day (No comments)
I Forgot Day (Holycow)
Father-in-Law Day (Hmmmm.....)
Walk Around Things Day (we do that daily, what crap)
Tell a Lie Day (It should be the other way, tell a truth)
Draw a Picture of a Bird Day (Who wants to draw a picture of a bird)
Rubber Eraser Day (Can some one erase this one)
Richter Scale Day (Wow....that shakes me off my feet!!)
Hairstyle Appreciation Day (hair today gone tomorrow)
Bad Poetry Day (Wanna try mine? he he he)

For the complete list of such days, click here. Now that all the days are over people have started celebrating months.........God save me.........Keep us away from such crap!!

Orange --> Pink --> Red

These are not the colors to which my face changed, travelling daily in Hyderabad Traffic nor the colors of my new dress(FYI: I never wore these colours). These are the colors changed by a company represented by a cute Pug. If you are still wondering about what I am talking, its Hutch.

Hutch entered the mobile market with bright Orange color, changed to Pink couple of months back and with Vodafone acquiring the company, the color now changed to Red.

If you are a regular follower of business news, in recent past we might have noticed many mergers and takeovers. Kanbay Taken over by CapGemini, Arcelor taken over by Mittal Steel and Corus taken over by Tata Steel being the major ones. There has been a rumor in the industry that Infosys is going to take over CapGemini few weeks back and news that Tata is bidding to take over Jaguar and Land Rover. So, out there its always bigger fish eating the smaller ones. Many big companies grew bigger and bigger through acquisitions, for example: Google, Microsoft, AOL, CA, EarthLink, Motorala, General Motors, Ford and many more. Almost Every company big and small did it in the past and many are still doing it, to be ahead in the race called business.

Sometimes these mergers do not go as planned as in the case of VisualSoft and AppLabs and sometimes not so employee friendly, for example Oracle fired thousands of employees during their merger with PeopleSoft. So, a merger can be good or bad - depends on what perspective you are looking at.

As far as I know, one thumb rule always rules in this cut throat competition , "Only the best of the best survive"!

QWERTY*?

When I was first started to type, many years ago, I asked the same question everyone else asks, why are the keys arranged so stupidly? Why aren’t they laid out in a more logical order, as in, just to take one random example, alphabetically? (Please note that I am not a great typer, even now I search for the keys :-))

The answer I’ve heard/read countless times is that the first typewriter keyboards were arranged alphabetically, but that caused mechanical problems—once typists became reasonably proficient, the keys jammed frequently because the hammers corresponding to certain frequently used letter sequences were too close together. As a result, so the story goes, the QWERTY layout was designed to prevent jamming by moving those letters farther apart, thus slowing down the typists to a speed the machine could handle.

Did you guys know that, a more sensible and efficient layout called the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard has been around for a long time, but never became very popular because QWERTY simply had too much momentum in the marketplace. This Dvorak keyboard three flavors, for the people who use right hand, for those who use left hand and for those who use both hands for typing.
Sounds interesting right, just look at the layout of Dvorak keyboard below:
After looking at the Dvorak Keyboard, I feel our QWERTY Keyboard is much easier Or is that that we are so used to QWERTY that we do not find anything else easier? Not sure, but what I am sure is QWERTY is here to stay!!

*QWERTY are the first six letters on the conventional keyboard we use so its called so

Anaconda - Synonym for sheer power!

Anaconda lifting the full grown Kangaroo(I guess) from water on to the ledge, holding with its jaw. Click on the above picture to see details.

I think I have mentioned earlier that I have an unknown interest and liking towards snakes. I can watch hours and hours of documentaries and programs about snakes on TV. Getting close to a live wild snake(though it was a small one) couple of months back was my dream come true.

Of all the snakes the Anacondas are the ones which intrigue me the most. Their size, power, patience and dexterity knocks me off my feet.

Anacondas are four species of aquatic boa inhabiting the swamps and rivers of the dense forests of tropical South America. The Yellow Anaconda can be found as far south as Argentina.

Anacondas in the wild spend most of their time in rivers hunting for their food. They are solitary creatures that are thought to be somewhat shy and not many of them are easily seen. They are very well camouflaged in the swamps and bogs in which they thrive. There are some historical reports of early European explorers of the South American jungles seeing giant anacondas up to 110 feet long and some of the native peoples of the South American jungle have reported seeing anacondas up to 50 feet long, although there has been no recorded evidence of anacondas of those sizes having been caught. It is important to note that when a dead anaconda's hide or skin is laid out it can be stretched very easily, expanding to much longer lengths than the snake exhibited when alive. Reports of outsize anacondas that cannot be verified are often due to distortions in perception, or a snake skin being disproportionately stretched and inaccurately measured.

It should be noted that the Wildlife Conservation Society has, since the early 20Th century, offered a large cash reward (now grown to $50,000 USD) for live delivery of any snake of 30 feet or more in length. The prize has never been claimed. Also, in a study of 1000 wild anacondas in Brazil, the largest captured was 17 feet long.

International Standard Serial Number - ISSN

I think we all know that most of the published books have a ISBN (International Standard Book Numbering) number, there is also a numbering system for online publications.

This is managed by ISSN (International Standard Serial Number), it is eight digit number which identifies periodic publications. This also can be used for printed publications, CD ROMs or floppy disks.
ISSN are assigned since the 1970s and universally accepted within the print publishing world as a means of identifying the serials.

World SysAdmin Day - 27'th July 2007(Today)

System Administrator Appreciation Day, also known as Sysadmin Day or SAAD, was created by Ted Kekatos, a system administrator in Chicago. Kekatos was inspired to create the special day by a Hewlett-Packard magazine advertisement in which a system administrator is presented with flowers and fruit-baskets by grateful co-workers as thanks for installing new printers. The holiday exists to show appreciation for the work of sysadmins and other IT workers. It is celebrated on the last Friday in July. The first System Administrator Appreciation Day was celebrated on July 28, 2000.

A sysadmin unpacks the server for us from its box, installs an operating system, patches it for security, makes sure the power and air conditioning was working in the server room, monitors it for stability, sets up the software, and keeps backups in case anything went wrong. All to save the work we have done

Also, sysadmin installs the routers, puts the cables, configures the networks, sets up the firewalls, and watches and guides the traffic for each hop of the network that runs over copper, fiber optic glass, and even the air itself to bring the Internet to your computer.

Not to forget, a sysadmin makes sure your network connection is safe, secure, open, and working. A sysadmin makes sure your computer is working in a healthy way on a healthy network. A sysadmin takes backups to guard against disaster both human and otherwise, holds the gates against security threats and crackers, and keeps the printers going no matter how many copies of the tax code someone from Accounting prints out.

A sysadmin worries about spam, viruses, spyware, but also power outages, fires and floods.
When the email server goes down at 2 AM on a Sunday, your sysadmin is paged, wakes up, and goes to work.

A sysadmin is a professional, who plans, worries, hacks, fixes, pushes, advocates, protects and creates good computer networks, to get you your data, to help you do work -- to bring the potential of computing ever closer to reality.

So if you can read this, thank your sysadmin -- and know he or she is only one of dozens or possibly hundreds whose work brings you the email from your aunt on the other side of the world, the instant message from your friend onsite, the free phone call from your brother in Australia, and this webpage.

One small step for man, a giant leap for mankind

Today is the day, man expanded his boundries beyond the planet Earth and landed on the moon 38 years back i.e., on July 20, 1969.

Bootprint of Edwin Aldrin on the Moon

The Apollo 11 mission was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. It was the fifth human spaceflight of the Apollo programs, and the third human voyage to the moon. Launched on July 16, 1969, it carried Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin.

"One small step for man, a giant leap for mankind" are the words spoken by Neil Armstrong, Placing his left foot on the surface of the Moon at 2:56 UTC July 21, 1969. About 15 minutes after the first step, Buzz Aldrin joined Armstrong on the surface saying, "Beautiful. Beautiful. Magnificent desolation", becoming the second human to ever set foot on the moon. Then for two-and-a-half hours, they took notes, photographed what they saw, and drilled core samples.

Then they took a phone call from President Richard Nixon after planting the U.S. flag together on the Moon's surface. The flag planting and subsequent phone call from President Nixon were later given by Aldrin as the reason why out of the entire photographic record of Apollo 11 there are no intentional photographs of Armstrong. There are only five images of Armstrong partly shown or reflected. Aldrin said it was planned to take a photo of Armstrong after the famous image of Aldrin was taken, but they were interrupted by the Nixon communication. There were just over five minutes between these two events. The mission was timelined to the minute, with the majority of photographic tasks to be performed by Armstrong with their single Hasselblad camera.

After more than 2½ hours on the lunar surface, they had left behind scientific instruments such as a retroreflector array used for the Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment. They also left an American flag and a plaque (mounted on the LM Descent Stage ladder) bearing two drawings of Earth (of the Western and Eastern Hemispheres), an inscription, and signatures of the astronauts and Richard Nixon. The inscription read Here Men From The Planet Earth First Set Foot Upon the Moon, July 1969 A.D. We Came in Peace For All Mankind.

The historical plaque on the ladder of Apollo 11's lunar module "Eagle", still remaining on the Moon.

So, what is the next step?

The question I got is, after 38 years of landing on the Moon, where are we now? We have explored beyond the nine planets using the most advanced and powerful satellites and telescopes but to what extent we were able to take man?

Manned Mars exploration by the United States has been explicitly identified as a long-term goal in the Vision for Space Exploration announced in 2004 by US President George W. Bush. NASA and Lockheed Martin have begun work on the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV), which is currently scheduled to send a human expedition to Earth's moon by 2020 as a stepping stone to an expedition to Mars thereafter.

The European Space Agency hopes to land humans on Mars between 2030 and 2035.This will be preceded by successively larger probes, starting with the launch of the ExoMars probe and a Mars Sample Return Mission.

So, next destination..........MARS!

Friday the 13'Th?

Picture courtesy Kiran Kumar PY, my school buddy

When ever I hear "Friday the 13'Th", the things I relate to are Horror , ghosts, death, something bad etc. It not from experience that this thoughts come up from, but they are from the movies I have been seeing since child hood.

So why I or most of the people come up with such assumptions about Friday the 13'Th? Because from the early days of TV and movies, Friday the 13'Th is the day when the ghost rises or the murders start or something evil happens.

A Friday occurring on the 13'Th day of any month is considered to be a day of bad luck in English, German, Polish and Portuguese-speaking cultures around the globe. Similar superstitions exist in some other traditions. In Greece or Spain, for example, Tuesday the 13'Th takes the same role.

The fear of Friday the 13'Th is called paraskavedekatriaphobia (a word that is derived from the concatenation of the Greek words Παρασκευή, δεκατρείς, and φοβία, meaning Friday, thirteen, and phobia respectively; and is a specialized form of triskaidekaphobia, a phobia (fear) of the number thirteen.

However, many popular stories exist about the origin of the concept:

  • The popular painting of the Last Supper, with stories that Judas numbered among the thirteen guests (Jesus plus his 12 apostles), and that the Crucifixion of Jesus occurred Friday.

  • The Knights Templar

Some people are so paralyzed by fear that they are simply unable to get out of bed when Friday the 13'Th rolls around. The Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute estimates that more than 17 million people are affected by a fear of this day. Despite that, representatives for both Delta and Continental Airlines say that their airlines don't suffer from any noticeable drop in travel on those Fridays.

A British Medical Journal study has shown that there is a significant increase in traffic-related accidents on Friday the 13Th's.

I am not sure what others might think, but I am going to enjoy my weekend(Friday).

So, Happy Friday the 13'Th.......Ooops.........Happy Week End!!

Have Fun!!

Haven't you Blackled yet?

Blackle is a new Eco-Friendly search engine on the web. If you are thinking that I am asking you guys to bid adieu to our favorite search engine Google, you are wrong. Blackle is Google dressed in black!

So, why should Google dress in black? What difference does in make to the environment? Read on for the answers...

Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. "Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen." For more information on Energy Use and Power Levels in New Monitors and Personal Computers click here.

What made Google to go for Blackle?

In January 2007 a blog post titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine. Since then there has been skepticism about the significance of the energy savings that can be achieved and the cost in terms of readability of black web pages.

Google believed that there is value in the concept because even if the energy savings are small, they all add up. Secondly we feel that seeing Blackle every time we load our web browser reminds us that we need to keep taking small steps to save energy.

However, for a CRT display, the difference of amount of power used for black and white is much high, but todays modern LCD displays use the same amount of power whether black or white. But technically there is still a difference for most LCD displays, however small.

How can we help?

Let us set Blackle as your home page. This way every time you load our Internet browser you we save a little bit of energy. Remember every bit counts! We will also be reminded about the need to save energy each time we see the Blackle page load.

Help spread the word about Blackle by telling your friends and family to set it as their home page. If you have a blog then give us a mention. Or put the following text in your email signature: "Blackle.com - Saving energy one search at a time".

Happy Blackling!!!

Have you Googled it?

This is the question most people ask now a days if you ask them something. It has become a slang which is most popular these days. You can search of anything from Cooking recipes to Photos, White papers, Code, Downloads, News, Books, Universities, Blogs :-) ..Tips on anything....and more........and more.

To brief up you can search for absolutely anything under the Sun!! Ooops, that is wrong. You can search for anything under anything. This has become so popular that the word "Googled" was added to Oxford English Dictionary (OED) and Merriam-Webster in 2006. The meaning they gave for Googled is "to use the Google search engine to seek online information".

Google is the best self help that have happened to us. So if you dont know anything, just Google it!! You want to know for what company Bharani Surineni became youngest CEO. Just Google it!!...Kidding..........!!!!

Below are few of the Search options you have from Google:

Book Search - Search the full text of books

Directory - Browse the web by topic

One thing you have to learn is giving right key words while Googling. This has to come by practice and as we keep on Googling we will come to know how to refine our key words. So, what are you waiting for? Happy Googling!!!

A Life Revealed

Left: The picture that appeared in the National Geographic Magazine(1985) Right: Present

Her eyes have captivated the world since she appeared on the cover of National Geographic Magazine in 1985. Now we can tell her story.

Names have power, so let us speak of hers. Her name is Sharbat Gula, and she is Pashtun, that most warlike of Afghan tribes. It is said of the Pashtun that they are only at peace when they are at war, and her eyes—then and now—burn with ferocity. She is 28, perhaps 29, or even 30. No one, not even she, knows for sure. Stories shift like sand in a place where no records exist. Time and hardship have erased her youth. Her skin looks like leather. The geometry of her jaw has softened. The eyes still glare; that has not softened.

“She’s had a hard life,” said McCurry. “So many here share her story.” Consider the numbers. Twenty-three years of war, 1.5 million killed, 3.5 million refugees: This is the story of Afghanistan in the past quarter century.

Now, consider this photograph of a young girl with sea green eyes. Her eyes challenge ours. Most of all, they disturb. We cannot turn away.

“There is not one family that has not eaten the bitterness of war,” a young Afghan merchant said in the 1985 National Geographic story that appeared with Sharbat’s photograph on the cover. She was a child when her country was caught in the jaws of the Soviet invasion. A carpet of destruction smothered countless villages like hers. She was perhaps six when Soviet bombing killed her parents. By day the sky bled terror. At night the dead were buried. And always, the sound of planes, stabbing her with dread.

“We left Afghanistan because of the fighting,” said her brother, Kashar Khan, filling in the narrative of her life. He is a straight line of a man with a raptor face and piercing eyes. “The Russians were everywhere. They were killing people. We had no choice.”

Shepherded by their grandmother, he and his four sisters walked to Pakistan. For a week they moved through mountains covered in snow, begging for blankets to keep warm.
“You never knew when the planes would come,” he recalled. “We hid in caves.”
The journey that began with the loss of their parents and a trek across mountains by foot ended in a refugee camp tent living with strangers.

“Rural people like Sharbat find it difficult to live in the cramped surroundings of a refugee camp,” explained Rahimullah Yusufzai, a respected Pakistani journalist who acted as interpreter for McCurry and the television crew. “There is no privacy. You live at the mercy of other people.” More than that, you live at the mercy of the politics of other countries. “The Russian invasion destroyed our lives,” her brother said.

It is the ongoing tragedy of Afghanistan. Invasion. Resistance. Invasion. Will it ever end? “Each change of government brings hope,” said Yusufzai. “Each time, the Afghan people have found themselves betrayed by their leaders and by outsiders professing to be their friends and saviors.”

In the mid-1990s, during a lull in the fighting, Sharbat Gula went home to her village in the foothills of mountains veiled by snow. To live in this earthen-colored village at the end of a thread of path means to scratch out an existence, nothing more. There are terraces planted with corn, wheat, and rice, some walnut trees, a stream that spills down the mountain (except in times of drought), but no school, clinic, roads or running water.
