Ask a Stupid Question Day!

Yes, can you believe it, there is even a day for asking a "Stupid Question" and that is today! Huh...

I always thought, who the hell comes up with all such 'Stupid days'?, haha, I guess this might be my stupid question for the day. The hype for such days started with Valentines Day and later came Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Grandparents Day and what not.

Taken our culture, I think that there is no need for all such days. Its because we do not need a specific day to thank/to show love to our parents or the person whom we love. We always do it and we can always spend some time for them when needed or when ever we can.

Coming to my initial question, Who the hell creates such 'days'?

These "Days" are created by companies, special interest groups, sports teams, and not to forget the major contributor the greeting card companies(including Ecards) by simply declaring it so.

It seems some of these "days" are created because there isn't anything going on a particular day, and the card companies need something for every day of the year to keep their business running. The vast majority of these are local, one-time events that do not capture much attention and are soon forgotten. Official or not, a number of these take hold, and show up year after year.
At least one individual or company has created a number of humorous "days". They created the day, copyrighted it (believe it or not, it's true), and then wrote a book describing them. These "days" were created simply for profit.

Let us have some insight on, Origin of Ask a Stupid Question Day:

The roots of this special day goes back to the 1980's. At the time, there was a movement by teachers to try to get kids to ask more questions in the classroom. Kids sometimes hold back, fearing their question is stupid, and asking it will result in ridicule.Teachers created this day on September 28, If it fell on a weekend, they would celebrate it on the last day of the month.

Check out some weirdest days that are celebrated:

Chocolate Cake Day (Who needs a day for this, I eat it when ever I like)
Beer Can Appreciation Day (Same thig goes here also, I can drink when ever I like)
National Inane Answering Message Day (Who cares!!)
Clean out Your Computer Day (one in a year, come on)
Walking the Dog Day (If you dont walk, you have to clean its S&^%)
National Potato Chip Day ($$%^*&* &*&* &*%&^)
National Indian Pudding Day (No comments)
I Forgot Day (Holycow)
Father-in-Law Day (Hmmmm.....)
Walk Around Things Day (we do that daily, what crap)
Tell a Lie Day (It should be the other way, tell a truth)
Draw a Picture of a Bird Day (Who wants to draw a picture of a bird)
Rubber Eraser Day (Can some one erase this one)
Richter Scale Day (Wow....that shakes me off my feet!!)
Hairstyle Appreciation Day (hair today gone tomorrow)
Bad Poetry Day (Wanna try mine? he he he)

For the complete list of such days, click here. Now that all the days are over people have started celebrating months.........God save me.........Keep us away from such crap!!

Important FYI's:

FYI 1:

The Supreme Court has ruled that all injured persons especially in the case of road traffic accidents, assaults, etc., when brought to a hospital / medical centre, have to be offered first aid, stabilized and shifted to a higher centre / government centre if required.

Your responsibility ends as soon as you leave the person at the hospital. The hospital bears the responsibility of informing the police, first aid, etc.

Please do inform your family and friends about these basic rights so that we all know what to expect and what to do in the hour of need.

FYI 3:

Have u ever heard about LPG cylinder's expire date.

How to find LPG cylinder's expiry date?
Do you know that there is an expiry date (physical life) for LPG Cylinders?

Expired Cylinders are not safe for use and may cause accidents. In this regard please be cautious at the time of accepting any LPG cylinder from the vendor.

Here is how we can check the expiry of LPG cylinders:
On one of three side stems of the cylinder, the expiry date is coded
alpha numerically as follows A or B or C or D and some two digit number following this e.g. D06.

The alphabets stand for quarters -
A for March (First Qtr)
B for June (Second Qtr)
C for Sept (Third Qtr)
D for December (Fourth Qtr)

The digits stand for the year till it is valid.
Hence D06 would mean December qtr of 2006.

Please do not accept the cylinder if the date has already expired.
"A" stands for the first quarter i.e. January to March and
"07" stands for the present year 2007.

We all were still confused with the terms used above.

A-07 indicates the expiry life of cylinder and not the GAS filled in it. This cylinder should not be used and returned to the gas dealer. Expired Cylinders are not safe for use and may cause accidents. ALL concerned should take necessary steps.

If you have any other important FYI's that can help us in our daily life, please do email me @ bharani.surineni@gmail.com, I will be glad to post them to share it with everyone.

Safe farewell to lord Ganesha

Amidst thousands of Cops and para military forces, we bid adieu to Lord Ganesha yesterday. People who were on the roads yesterday has to say that there were more cops on the roads than devotees. All this due to the bomb threat during this period and few unsocial activities happening in the recent past.

As the saying goes, all is good that ends good. The fare well to Ganesha went on peacefully without any discord. Also, the rain god showering his blessings in the evening brought in fresh and extra enthusiasm in the devotees.

Coming to me, office declared holiday for Ganesh Visarjan as roads will be blocked due to the processions on the roads and might be also due to the bomb scare. So, having no were to go I stuck to my routine - eat, sleep, watch movies, music and sleep.

At last, one thing that went on without any problems in this Government......Phew!!

Nerve wrecking...Nail biting ...Spine chilling

What else can happen and what more can a cricket fan want? Its a dream come true for all the cricket fans on the planet when arch rivals India and Pakistan play for the World T20 cup!!

Match was to start at 5.30 PM India time and by 5 PM most of the seats in our office were empty, including mine ;-). I am sure its the same case in most of the work places. I rushed home through the Traffic and crashed on the couch in front of the TV with a big bowl of pop corn in my hands.

The innings started with India batting, which was slow in the initial stages with couple of wickets down. But towards the end of 20 overs India pooled up a decent score and it was up to the Indian bowlers to bowl out Pakistan within the target.

Pakistan at midway lost half the wickets and the match was almost in the favour of India. But with few sixes Pakistan was back in the game and the target looked easier to reach. The only option for India was to pick wickets and at this point every Indian was praying for a fall of wicket siting at the edge of their seats. With the decreasing number of balls and runs to win the pulse of every Indian rose to the peak.

And at the end, India lifted the T20 World Cup playing against none other than Pakistan.

Congratulations to the Team India and every Indian.....Way to Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rocking weekend!!

When I say "Rocking Weekend", it literally was a Rocking one. This Sunday morning, our gang(Vivek, Srikanth, Sajjad, his son(Saif) daughter(Afra), his friend Raghu and me) drove into the rocky hills which come up few kilometers after Bachpally for our weekly Photography Expedition.

This time my equipment was missing as my Sony H2 had problem with auto focusing for the third time in past 6 months, and I had to give it for servicing. Event without my camera I had a blast "on the rocks" and enjoyed my Sunday morning to the max.

With Sajjad in our gang we get to see some amazing jumps from him and sometimes we also get inspired from him. These jumps pumped enough adrenaline into my body which I can relish for the entire week. This was a bit milder than our decent in, The Day I Lived Again but unique in its own way. Any slip on our trek would have surely resulted in some broken bones. But no casualties, except for some regular bruises and we are ready for the next weekend.

As I said, my camera was missing and it was a good reason for me to spend much time with the rocks. All the photographs below are clicked by Vivek.

Aaaaand there I go........................:

Orange --> Pink --> Red

These are not the colors to which my face changed, travelling daily in Hyderabad Traffic nor the colors of my new dress(FYI: I never wore these colours). These are the colors changed by a company represented by a cute Pug. If you are still wondering about what I am talking, its Hutch.

Hutch entered the mobile market with bright Orange color, changed to Pink couple of months back and with Vodafone acquiring the company, the color now changed to Red.

If you are a regular follower of business news, in recent past we might have noticed many mergers and takeovers. Kanbay Taken over by CapGemini, Arcelor taken over by Mittal Steel and Corus taken over by Tata Steel being the major ones. There has been a rumor in the industry that Infosys is going to take over CapGemini few weeks back and news that Tata is bidding to take over Jaguar and Land Rover. So, out there its always bigger fish eating the smaller ones. Many big companies grew bigger and bigger through acquisitions, for example: Google, Microsoft, AOL, CA, EarthLink, Motorala, General Motors, Ford and many more. Almost Every company big and small did it in the past and many are still doing it, to be ahead in the race called business.

Sometimes these mergers do not go as planned as in the case of VisualSoft and AppLabs and sometimes not so employee friendly, for example Oracle fired thousands of employees during their merger with PeopleSoft. So, a merger can be good or bad - depends on what perspective you are looking at.

As far as I know, one thumb rule always rules in this cut throat competition , "Only the best of the best survive"!

Time for a break!

It's 5 in the evening and I just woke up from my afternoon sleep. Being a not so "sleepy" person, this might come as a surprise to those who know me, but this is true. I am writing this post straight from my bed, sipping on Orange Juice.

Yesterday, with my foolish thought to reach home early, I started from work around 5.40 in the evening. Though it rained heavily yesterday afternoon, when I started from work it was drizzling and I thought I will reach home without getting drenched completely. But later when I was stuck amidst of thousands of vehicles, in ankle deep water and rain pouring down like there was no tomorrow, I came to know that it's a very bad idea to think to reach home early.

Last week, I wrote about Hyderabad traffic for the N'th time in Can it be more worse? and yesterday, I got my answer. Yes, it can be more worse and speaking figuratively F#$%* worse. One thing I missed in Can it be more worse? is any disaster which might block the traffic. With the Fly Over crash last weekend, the whole stretch of the Panjagutta was blocked and the traffic was being diverted.

I reached home at 7.40 in the night yesterday i.e., it took 2 hours for me to travel 17 kilometers. After being drenched for so much time and with loads of mental stress in traffic, I thought I need a break badly. Atleast 1 day away from traffic and pollution. So, I decided to just Sleep, Eat and Sleep and eat more and sleep :-). and I am doing it!!

So, time to get back to sleep......ohh sorry first eat something and take rest.......

QWERTY*?

When I was first started to type, many years ago, I asked the same question everyone else asks, why are the keys arranged so stupidly? Why aren’t they laid out in a more logical order, as in, just to take one random example, alphabetically? (Please note that I am not a great typer, even now I search for the keys :-))

The answer I’ve heard/read countless times is that the first typewriter keyboards were arranged alphabetically, but that caused mechanical problems—once typists became reasonably proficient, the keys jammed frequently because the hammers corresponding to certain frequently used letter sequences were too close together. As a result, so the story goes, the QWERTY layout was designed to prevent jamming by moving those letters farther apart, thus slowing down the typists to a speed the machine could handle.

Did you guys know that, a more sensible and efficient layout called the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard has been around for a long time, but never became very popular because QWERTY simply had too much momentum in the marketplace. This Dvorak keyboard three flavors, for the people who use right hand, for those who use left hand and for those who use both hands for typing.
Sounds interesting right, just look at the layout of Dvorak keyboard below:
After looking at the Dvorak Keyboard, I feel our QWERTY Keyboard is much easier Or is that that we are so used to QWERTY that we do not find anything else easier? Not sure, but what I am sure is QWERTY is here to stay!!

*QWERTY are the first six letters on the conventional keyboard we use so its called so

Six years to 'The day terror struck'

When we hear September 11'Th or 9/11(pronounced "nine eleven") the only thing we can relate to is the attack of terrorists affiliated with al-Qaeda on the World Trade Center in New York City, one plane into each tower (1 WTC and 2 WTC), resulting in the collapse of both buildings.

WTC burning in the background of the Empire State Building

The World Trade Center was on of my Favorite buildings* right from my school days. I still remember the day it happened i.e., September 11 2001, I was in my 3'rd year of Engineering. I along with my friends came to our room after college in the evening , we got the news and watched the news feed on our house owners television. I was shocked and it took some time for me to believe what I am seeing. I felt sad for the loss and couldn't stand seeing the structure go down.

This act of terrorism shows how much a person can hate a country and to what extent he can go to damage its resolve. In response to this attack, United States waged a war against terrorism and almost flattened every mountain in Afghanistan. But in wain, could not get its hands on the man who planned all this, Mr. Laden.

Six years later, I think we are no less terrified. The reason, these acts of terrorism never ceased, they continued with September 18,2001 - anthrax attacks , March 11,2004 - Madrid train bombings, July 7 - 2005 London bombings, not to mention innumerable smaller attacks in other parts of the world.

Who is to blame? I guess there is no answer for this question. And one thing I came to know by this incident is that there is nothing like a safe place on this planet, anything can happen anywhere.

*I will write about my favourite buildings at length sometime later

Hydera'BAD' Times II

Just when the sad memories of the twin blasts which rocked the beautiful city of Hyderabad couple of weeks back(Hydera'BAD' Times) were about to fade, another disaster struck yesterday evening, where many Innocent lives were lost.

The disaster came in the form of a Fly over in construction which crashed along with the metal scaffolding under it. It was Sunday evening and I guess traffic might be a bit less than usual weekday traffic or else the death toll would have been much higher.

The reason for the collapse? heavy down pour for an hour or so. Its a fly over which should withstand thousands of such rains and last for centuries, dammit!! not something which falls off like a pack of cards.

Who is to blame now? Is it the Government which gave the contract of the flyover to a black listed company? Or The GHMC(Greater Hyderabad Municipality Crap or something) which cannot over look the progress and quality of the construction or the water board which dug up along the flyover? Every one is in the Blame Game now, but can the lives of the innocent people who were enjoying their Sunday evening brought back?

My question is, they can construct the flyover back again (that too god knows when, getting the central Government reports, Enquiry committee reports and what not) but can they construct back the confidence of the people? Its sucks .............I never ever thought that my city can turn out to be so unpredictable and dangerous. One hit after another....... Is the government sleeping? ha ha..I guess its not even sleeping its DEAD.....Dead .....DEAD...and corrupt to the inner most core.

Its busy dealing with its inner politics, resolving conflicts among its own party workers and Grabbing land. Where is the time for them to look at the plight of common man?

I am sick and tired of it!!

Worst Customer Service Experience in my life!!

Being in Customer Service industry for around 4 years and being a trainer in the past, let me first define what Customer Service means to me. Its providing the customers with information/help with the products or services in the most effective and timely manner. I agree that Customer Service has some boundaries but its unwritten rule that we can always go an extra mile or out of the way to help the customer is always there.

So, let me come to my experience, sorry the worst ever Customer Service experience. I guess its better to say that worst experience's, as every time I visit them its only the worst experience. Now a days when ever I have to go there, I am prepared mentally that it only the worst of the worst experience that I am going to get.

Wondering whom I am talking about? Its Reliance Communications! Yes, you are correct an Anil Dhirubhai Ambani group of company.

How it all started....

I was in need of an Internet connection and in the area where I live there is no provider who is offering a broadband connection. You might suggest BSNL but alas that's not on the list either. The only option I had was going for a wireless connection. At the same time one of my friend wanted to sell off his Reliance Data card which came free with his laptop as he already had a broadband at home.

So , I took the data card from(which has 3 months free plan:-)) him and became a customer of Reliance Communications. At that moment, I did not have the slight idea of pain I was to go through being a customer of Reliance.

Moment of truth...

After few days the Internet stopped working and I went to the Reliance WebWorld for help(One sick thing is you can call reliance customer service from reliance phone only). The person over there said that the total bill crossed the limit and so the connection was suspended. After me explaining to 3 executives that the connection was no 3 months free plan they said that they will restore the connection by next day.

I waited for 3 days and no progress. I visited the reliance WebWorld again and the information I got is my bill has crossed the limit and so my connection was barred. Again I tried hard to explain the simple fact that its on 3 months free and I do not have to pay anything. They said they will restore the connection back in 2 days.

I waited for 4 days and still my Internet connection dead as a log. I visited the WebWorld and was ready to punch the person if he talks about my bill. For my surprise, this time the reason was different. They said that my house address verification was negative and that is the reason for suspending the services.

Again, I explained him that it was on my friends name and wanted to know why the hell they would verify the address in the middle of a plan when there is 2 months of free service still left. They did not have any answer. I gave my friends address, phone number etc. and the time I got this time is 2 days.

(This one is a killer) As you might have guessed, still the connection was not restored and I visited the WebWorld again. This time the reason I got for disconnection is there was some Rs. 200 due on my account and the due date has passed. Not having any energy to argue further, I told him that I am ready to pay the bill now. They said the bill payments are accepted only till 8 PM and as it was 8.30 PM they cannot take my payment now and asked me to come again tomorrow. This freaked me out, I raised my voice and shouted on one of the executive on what has happened from all these days. After the shouting he accepted to take the payment and restore the services.

From frying pan into fire...

After one happy month I thought of changing the connection on to my name so that there will be no complications in the future. So I, my friend with address proof, ID proof and photographs went to Ameerpet reliance WebWorld. The guy simply said that its not possible. The reason: My friend stays in Alwal, I stay in Kondapur. As the connection should be transferred to the Kondapur area I should give the application at Madhapur branch of WebWorld. I told him that that was sick, when buying the datacard we can buy from any location irrespective of address but all these sick rules come up now. The guy was very very rude and asked me to leave as he cannot help me. I asked him to give me the phone number of Madhapur WebWorld, the answer I got was "I do not know"(Very rude tone). I said can you please ask someone and find it out, he said " no, I will not do that its your problem to find the number". With bad words filled in my mouth, I left the place.

Payback time...

So another month passed, 3 months free trail expired and the bill payment time came. With my previous experience at Ameerpet Webworld I swore I will never visit that branch again. So, I went to Panjagutta webworld, payed the bill and when I enquired about the change in ownership, they said they can do it if I can get all the documents i.e., My address proof, ID proof, photograph and authorization letter from the original owner. I re-confirmed all the documents and went home happy.

Couple of days later I took all the requested documents and went to the Panjagutta WebWorld, so after looking at those the guy said he needs self attested ID proof on the original owner, which seemed logical but they never mentioned that to me when I asked for the required documents twice.

Bugged up to the core.........

A week later, I got the required documents from my friend and submitted a the documents at the Panjagutta WebWorld. The guy said it will take 72 hours(3 days) for the transfer to happen. So I gave them 15 days time and visited the branch day before yesterday. I talked to the lady at the desk and came to know that my application was never received or it was lost and I have to submit the whole set again.

That was the limit, my vocal chords burst out, if it was not a lady on the other side I guess I would have lost control on my anger. I asked for the store Manager, for which she said he is not available. I asked for his phone number immediately so that I can talk to him, without out answering my question she went inside and brought a huge pile of trash(at least they are maintaining as if it was trash). After 30 minutes of search in that trash I found my application rusting in there.

Some use for the strain on my vocal chords. She said she will process the request for sure and asked me to check later. With minimal hope I left the store. I will post the ending or the new beginning what ever.........

In my so many visits to the Reliance store I found that the people over there are not at all friendly to the customers, in fact they are very rude and shout on customers, Their servers are most of the times down and they dont show any empathy towards the customers.

So my judgement on Reliance Customer Service, IT SUCKS BIG TIME!!!!

Funny Nostalgic Past....

Yesterday when I was cleaning my Fish Bowl I remembered a weird(now it feels very much weired) thing that I have done when I was a kid.

I think I was in my 6'Th or 7'Th standard and back then I had big Complan jar in which I had some fishes. I had couple of Goldie's, Angels and Fighters in it. Every day after I returned from school I used to see one fish dead in my jar, so on one holiday I sat in front of the bowl for most of the time to see what exactly was happening.

What I found was the Fighter Fish which will usually roam around the brim of the water was hunting down any fish which comes in its way. So, in this fashion all my fishes were killed by the fighters and at last, one of the fighters was also killed. The lone fighter stood the test of time alone in the jar for few months and after which it also gave up and passed off.

At those times I was very much intrigued with Egyptian culture and was reading and watching stuff about the Egyptian mummies and culture. So the idea struck, when my lone fighter died. I wanted to make it mummy and preserve it. So I began the process of mummification...he he he.. I cut the dead fish, removed its parts and dried it in the sun after putting some salt.

After the fish was dried for day or two, I wrapped it in cloth and put in inside a large match box(home lites). I kept the box inside a huge pile of sand on the terrace, paid it a tribute and prayed for the safe departure of its soul to the heavens. Thats all I can rember about this incident and as far as I remember I never went back to the box again.

When I think about it now, ofcourse its weired and funny, but it was way back in 6'th standard.
